We’re thrilled to share that two outstanding U3A members were honoured at this year’s 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards, held at Government House on 22 October.
Minister for Ageing, Ingrid Stitt MP and Robert Caulfield, President, Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria and Seniors Rights Victoria, joined the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, to present the awards.
Terry Hart from U3A Nunawading received a COTA Victoria Senior Achiever Award for his incredible contributions to education, mentorship, and inclusion.
Terry has volunteered with Sailability Victoria for over a decade, helping people with disability experience the joy of sailing. He also tutors refugee students through Anglicare Victoria and the SAIL Program, building bridges across generations and cultures.
At U3A Nunawading, Terry teaches the popular Understanding the Weather science class, now expanded to include climate change topics — empowering older Victorians to stay informed and engaged. He’s also a key member of the volunteer management team, supporting over 2,800 members!
Kate Donelan from U3A Port Fairy was awarded the Positive Ageing Award for her visionary leadership and advocacy.
Kate led the founding of U3A Port Fairy in 2018 after identifying a need for more learning and connection opportunities for older locals. Under her guidance, the group has grown to 280 members and fostered a vibrant volunteering culture.
She’s also a strong voice in local government, successfully lobbying for her shire to sign the Age-Friendly Victoria Declaration, ensuring a commitment to building inclusive, age-friendly communities.
Our President, Annie Grigg, attended the awards and was especially proud to see these two inspiring individuals recognised.
Congratulations Terry and Kate — your dedication uplifts the entire U3A community and beyond - we are all so proud!
