Monday afternoons during Term Two 2026 a small group of U3A members opted in to meet online to explore nutrition. We have watched the six sessions on Nutrition: Healthy Eating in Our Third Age presented by Dr Mitra Zarrati, Accredited Practising Dietitian. Mitra has volunteered her time and expertise for U3A members. Throughout the sessions there are opportunities to stop, reflect and discuss. Comments have included:
It’s great to be reminded of what I already knew; food groups and daily servings. Although I think some of my daily servings may have increased.
I didn’t know much about gut health. This is a new area I am wanting to explore. I think I’ll watch this session again.
Because of health reasons I’m unable to participate in courses at my local U3A. It’s been great having the opportunity to participate in a nutrition course with others from the comfort of my home.
It’s great to have access to the latest research in nutrition and for this course to be focussed on my needs at my age.
One U3A member after watching session one decided to run a face-to-face course for her local U3A. This course is available online to all U3A members with six sessions titled:
Session 1: Healthy Eating – Understanding Food Groups and Daily Servings
Session 2: Gut Health – Supporting Digestion and a Healthy Microbiome
Session 3: Food and Mood – The Connection Between Nutrition, Gut Health, and Mental Wellbeing
Session 4: Strong Bones and Muscles – Nutrition for Strength, Mobility, and Independence
Session 5: Heart-Healthy Eating – Protecting Your Heart Through Everyday Food Choices
Session 6: Nutrition and Quality of Sleep – Foods and Habits for Better Rest
On behalf of U3A Victoria, I want to thank Mitra for her contribution to the U3A movement, sharing her expertise and latest research for those of us living in our third age. Throughout my life I have had an interest in nutrition and this course has reminded me of what I already knew, latest research, tips for shopping and the complimentary nature of foods for a healthy diet.
